My cat has been decidedly off its food for at least a couple of weeks now. He's been de-wormed, de-flea'd, and seems in otherwise good health, but apart from licking the gravy off his dinner or eating a choice few crunchy bits, he leaves almost all of it for next door's kitten (who endlessly steals food from us). I'm assuming its because its small squeaky thing season, and he's filling up on things I'm glad he doesn't bring into the house. But just wanted to check in case anyone could think of any other reasons I should be aware of. He's seemed a bit sluggish, but that could just be the weather. Usually he likes his food so this is a bit odd.

One of ours looks at me looks at his food looks back at me, sneers and stalks off. His coat is lovely and soft and he hasn't lost any weight. Him and his siblings are bringing us little sad presents. I have also found two lizards minus tails in various dusty corners - both alive but I wish they wouldn't! If he isn't losing weight then he is probably ok? Go with your gut instinct - you know him best.

I think he's probably stocking up on small mammals. I had the unpleasant pleasure of witnessing our older one finishing off 'something' the other day. I was not quick enough to tell you what it was. She did seem to enjoy it though!

if you are happy with everything else and the cat is not suffering then wait until there are other symptoms i guess

the only other thing i can thnk of is teeth

they can get tooth ache which woudl put them off any solid stuff

but i would imagine it's dining elsewhere

Sally, I can only second what others have already mentioned - if he isn't losing weight and his teeth seem ok I would probably agree and say he is lunching (on something wild!) elsewhere.

You've wormed/flea sprayed him which is a good precaution.

That all confirms what I thought, I'll double check his teeth but I think they are ok (breath no worse that usual and that sort of thing) and put it down to him being a cat and doing it to wind me up. (and small squeaky things for breakfast)

Have you seen the cat drinking more than usual?

He has a bowl of water but usually drinks from water sources out on the hill (lots of little boggy places here) so I rarely see him drink at all. He's lying on his back waving his paws at me at the moment though, so seems ok

Wouldnt do any harm to weigh him now, and again in a week or so...

In order to weigh most cats, they have to be restrained - box, transport basket or whatever. Don't forget to subtract the weight of the box before you *write_down* the weight... If you have accurate enough bathroom scales, you could weigh yourself and repeat carrying the cat. But most 'bathroom' scales aren't very trustworthy!

Our cat goes through hungry and not so hungry periods. I know this is down to *other* food she catches, small mammals and bunnies. All the time she looks healthy I don't worry.

I think you will find its just the weather(hope so anyway!), try fresh food late at night when its cooled down. Mine will let food go off all day cos its too hot and then wolf fresh stuff at night when they have cooled down.(And had a sleep, and another, which they tend to do alot of anyway)
