I need to fix a threshold (is that right? Something for my front door to close against at the bottom). Our doorstep is slate and about the only thing I know about slate is that it splits easily. What sort of drill should I use, or has anyone any cunning suggestions?

Probably talking out of my you-know-where here, but doesn't slate split when you apply pressure down through the layers? (Is that called cleaving?). If you are drilling perpendicular to the grain, I would think it should be OK. After all, roof slates have holes drilled in them.

No cunning suggestions, but I recently cut slate tiles for a hearth using a water cooled cutting wheel, no problems

Drill and hosepipe perhaps?
