What sort of details do people look for in adverts? What sort of thing makes you read the advert and buy something? I'm mainly thinking of our adverts on the front site here: https://www.downsizer.net/Products%10Services/

From a reading point of view I would like some background and quite a few details, with pictures, contact details etc.

Do other's like brief details and a link to the traders web site?

Please don't forget that one of the main reasons for the site is to allow members to advertise for free! If anyone requires more detials then either post a query, PM myself or email: [email protected]

Brief details and a weblink for me. I tend to skip past ads with loads of text, they might be able to grab my attention but rarely hold it for long. They do sometimes make me curious enough to click the link.

I do wonder about using something like the google ad format for our traders on the forums.

Sounds like a good plan.

A list that looks little more than a directory of traders rarely persuades me to click. I'm far more inclined to buy if I feel that I 'know' the person behind the business.

So, how about in addition to the regular static list of traders each week/month one lucky trader(!) gets highlighted as a 'Featured Trader'? You could give them a decent sized slot, comprising of a mini-interview (how long they've been trading, why they started out, what makes them different, what their plans are for the future, etc), along with a few pics, details of any current special offers and a link to their own site (if applicable). Basically, dress the Advert up a bit so its more like an article/opinion piece. Just an idea....

I certainly think something along those lines would be good. Maybe losing a few more things from the front page in favour of a daily featured trader article?

The more I think about it the more I want to rotate the google ads on the forum with ads for our own traders. It would have to help the traders and a bit of rotation might even work against advert blindness, and hence may even help and not hinder site income.

I think rotating the ads might work. I've noticed that the same google ones come up over and over again which makes it easier not to notice them. If you see what I mean.

It is a very busy front page. I can see a simpler more ordered format working better, based more on menus than having too much up front. Rotated features sound like a good idea.

Looking at the forum, I think the trading post should be made into a section rather than a single topic. Under it you could split it off into 'wanted', livestock, meat, fruit & veg, crafts, etc., etc. That would make it easier to use & also have more impact on the forum, as at the moment I see some people putting sales/wanted items in the individual subject areas, which can get 'lost' if you are visiting the site with the intention of buying or selling.
