We think they are common earth balls. Best way to id them would be cut in half. If are black inside and smell like ammonia that's what they are. Look a bit like puffballs as have no real stem. Inedible! If doesn't smell or look black may well be puffballs. We have found a few of both this weekend. Hope this helps.

Looks like some form of earth ball, Scleroderma areolatum is the closest I can find. Not edible. There's some details here: https://www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/DisplayBlock~bid~6766~gid~.asp We went out this morning and didn't find a sausage.... or any edible fungi.

Thanks to both Rachel and TD (thanks for the link to pictures) for the id . I did find other things but they had already been nibbled. Typical that something untouched is not edible

Top view looks like Scleroderma areolatum. Side view looks like that too... But I've never found it under oak. You can't eat earthballs, but next time pick one and cut it in two. If it's white through it's a varity of puffball and it's good eating, if it isn't then it is either an overripe puffball (and nasty) or an earthball (and nastier).
