I figure you need about an 8mbs broadband connection for quality TV on demand. This type of connection is making its first inroads in the UK, but is a long way from being common.

From memory that would be a T3 connection to the home. Bit expensive, about �28K a year last time I ordered one. Sky is about �300 a year I think

I've got a chipped cable box that allows me to watch pretty much everything for next to nothing as it is

There was an advert the other night from currys or comet. A PC with digicard and tv out. It even uses the hard drive for recording live TV.

That is the future of things, it odes need to be a digicard, not just a TV card. Main problem afaik with "media" pcs, is that they are based on windoze and hence terminally flaky as a domestic appliance.

how do these things work then? Can I put a digicard in my pc and start to use it as an addition telly and save space?

Yup, haven't tried one though, there's a HTPC section on the avplus forum which you'll probably find interesting, can't find the link right now though

Look at the reviews, a poor product ebuyer list quite a few of these cards, but you really have to set aside a PC just for recording programs. SCSI would clearly help, but res will still be poor

Ive got a capture card for mine(Aver DVD EZmaker) which fits in a PCI slot.I got it for putting our VCR tapes onto VCD and it works very well.
It also lets you watch TV through the Video player.The VCR acts as the TV Tuner. I think the card was about �40. You can download programs to capture video(or watch whats on the VCR ie TV channels) from the Web, a good site is https://www.videohelp.com/ which has excellent advice aswell as downloads and directions.
