I`m about to start pier fishing for the first time. Given my limited means, I purchased the most basic telescopic rod I could which came with a spinner reel, plus a trolling line which I know is usually used in boats.
I wanted to ask, is it possible to use a trolling line from the pier? In this area (north west Sutherland) there are plenty mackerel regularly caught the past few weeks, so I wanted to give it a try...how feasible is it, to sit on the pier with a trolling line?
(Or am I liable to vanish over the side should a hungry shark happen along? )

I want to go too, bought a load of fly gear last year and went a total of 3 times and haven't even got a rod license yet this year so it will probably be a trip to the seaside one day for some mackerel bashing.

Something I've always wanted to try is fly fishing for mackerel.
You'd need a boat, sinking line & probably wise to use one fly not a bunch like mackerel feathers but it would be great sport playing a mackerel on light fly gear.

Yeah would be good fun as mackerel are right scrappers, I use my old carp gear for feathering and one of my rods is good fun as it's only a 1 1/4" test and although you don't have to really play the fish thay do put a good bend in the rod, god I wanna go now!!!
