I am sure that I read somewhere that BT do a fixed price for installing a phone/ line. Was about �140. Might have been business not domestic lines.

Or if your property extends to the nearest pole get them to install the phone in a weather tight & lockable box there & then run the cable yourselves.

I think that your problem is this. BT have provisioned a line and then have used splitting equipment to allow your neighbours to have service. The line is now over subscribed.

I live off-grid and have my broadband supplied via satelite with Avanti.

I think you will not get BT to budge as they have no obligation to provide you a service irrespective as to wether your neighbours have it.

Are you in a house or a temporary structure i.e. a caravan, it does make a big difference to the application of OPENREACH rules (not BT) Openreach is obliged to provide telephone service but at a price that has been agreed with OFTEL.

It's a log cabin, not sure how that fits into things.

We have our own line as the house next door was rented out for a couple of years and had several lines running to it for their web design business, all they're proposing to do is extend the line, 100 yards underground as far as our gate and then above ground to the cabin (because it was going to cost even more to dig the road up).

I was quoted �127-99 by the BT salesman- he never mentioned excess charges, first I heard about them was from the Openreach engineer. Unfortunately the nearest pole is at the other side of the neighbours house, on the opposite side of the road. The neighbours on the other side of us get it from the far neighbours, who have the line running across their land from the next road.

It seems a mixed up world where you are trying to order a phone line because you haven't got one and their favourite way to have contact is by phone... It wouldn't be so bad if the people who answer the phones actually knew what they were talking about

If it is a log cabin i suspect it is classed as a 'non served premise' and not a house.If you have planning permission for the log cabin to be permanently occupied then an allowance of �3400 for the first line is applied, if you don't then all the costs go down to you, i know because i used to be a Openreach planner, don't shoot the messenger!
But even with the allowance it can be soon eaten up with underground work, wayleaves etc

That's very interesting, thanks. It's a farm office with full planning and the planner guy wouldn't tell us the amount they were working to.

I rang Primus today after Paul (my brother) was talking about a chap who had a line put in (to a non-res unit), with a similar amount of work both under and overground, for just �70, which I presume is with Primus as their standard charge is �69. Watch this space...

It just feels odd talking to BT- the BT reps I have spoken to didn't seem like they were at all bothered about getting our business. I guess that explains why they couldn't be bothered processing the first three orders.

sako, what a coincidence I was an external planner on BT for 33 years in the Peak District. Time was when you gave service at what ever cost and the customer just payed the bog standard charge. What you lost on one customer you made up on many others but it all went pear shaped when they bought none BT people in to the management and the idea of providing a service went to the wall.I retired 4 years ago, i've just spent hours and 23 phone calls trying to sort out my broadband In the end I rang the press office and said I would be taking my story to the papers and my MP, it still took another month to sort out! Have you tried the Phone Co-op? You get to talk to a real person, and my experience so far is that they're very helpful.

Hi derbyshiredowser,
Yep i did 30 years, and over the last 2 years they really tightened up on costs and took full advantage of the oftel rulings.
To be honest i can see it from their side as well, if as they did in times gone by spent a huge amount of money getting a line to a caravan for example and then found within 12 months the caravan disappeared they could never recoup the money.
