Hi ,
I took my son fishing on 27th December on the Avon between Ringwood and Salisbury, Hampshire . We were spinning devon minnow lures for pike . Within two hours he had caught a 4.5lb Brown trout (kept), a 3.6lb rainbow trout (kept), and a 3lb seatrout (released ). No pike landed all day but he did lose a really good one at the river bank after a great fight when it did its last minute head shake . What a day ...

Hi
Niether cooked yet ...still resting in freezer !

Not sure about trout seasons .....also not sure how you could tell a youngster that his best ever fish had to go back . I talked him into returning the sea trout as I thought they are sort of endangered and he already had one in the bag by then .
Sorry if I fractured any laws .....it will be a first

thanks

Cor, nice fish! Well done your son - he's got every right to look proud as a proud thing with a brownie like that.

You could have explained that the reason there are laws to put back fish is that at this time of year they are spawning or spent and this big fella could have fathered 1000`s of offspring so that when he is older he can be proud to see a river teeming with fish.

Did you have a rod license/permission too ?

Will put up more pictures later today .

We have rod licenses and were on a private stretch of river about a mile in length . We had permission to fish and we even got bacon sandwiches brought out from the Bailiffs/managers house .
We were told we could keep anything we caught ,if we wanted to, but were asked not to return any pike .

I do feel that with a forum name such as KILLITnGRILLIT you are hardly in a position to take such a moralistic view. We did nothing wrong , we were invited , we can go back whenever we want (provided the gentry are not fly fishing ), we left the riverbank as we found it , and a youngster was out in the fresh air .

There is a moral quandary here..... Technically you did something wrong but because a person in authority told you otherwise, you were ignorant of the fact. There IS a close season for brown trout, whether they are stocked or wild. Rainbows are fair game all year round. Bailiffs or riparian owners do NOT have the authority to ignore close seasons, regardless of how 'private' they keep the fishing on their bit of river.

I think you make an excellent point though - your lad is now one of the 'brethren of the angle' and enjoyed a very productive day out in the fresh air. Just do the fish population a favour, and continue his education by teaching him the importance of close seasons. Not only will it keep him out of (potentially serious) trouble in the future, but it will help him understand substainability.

If you read the article on fly-fishing and fancy taking it up, pm me and I'll send your lad some flies to use. That really is a cracking brownie though - well done to your boy!
