Hi sorry for this ridiculus question but Im building a run for chickens which Im hoping to get and was wondering how tall a chicken or a bantam is. Would 1 foot be too low for a chicken?

It would definitely be too small for most chickens and it would probably be a bit of a tight fit even for a bantam - these last won't be that tall, but they do like to take off, jump, strectch etc. Our Sussex hens can happily stretch to 2 ft at least .

Do you have a breed in mind? You might be able to get specific measurements and I'll have a look in a book we have on poultry house construction this evening if that helps.

Welcome to the site by the way - there's no such thing as a ridiculous question here

If you need to get inside the run to clean it or to catch chickens 4 ft is better. Our Rhode Island Reds can easily do 3 ft from a standing jump!

If the chickens don't have anywhere else to go then you also need room for them to stretch and flap. Our hens often like to stretch their wings every so often so need a bit more room than you think. The are a good sized breed (two types of Sussex) and a run I made for their 'holiday' accommodation is just over 2 foot tall.

really you need to make it as tall as you can afford to.

you need to get in and clean so you need a convenient height and the birds will be happier if they feel they have enough space
