There have been massive kills of bees in Germany in the last couple of weeks - you may have heard. The culprit has been found to have been one of Bayer's highly toxic seed dressings.

What you probably don't know is that the British Bee Keepers Association (BBKA) actually endorses some of Bayer's pesticides as being 'bee friendly' - which is actually far from the truth.

The BBKA accepts 'donations' from Bayer amounting to around ï¿½20,000 pa in return for Bayer being able to use their logo on some of their products.

There is a campaign to persuade the BBKA to STOP endorsing pesticides - see https://www.britishbeekeeping.com and to start supporting organic farming.

That is interesting Tavascarow. I'm a member of the BBKA, through my local association as I'm sure most of the bee keepers on here are. I'll bring it up when I visit the apiary next weekend.

Beekeepers are often the shy, retiring type, but in this case many have gone well beyond the 'I say! Bad show!' stage. Yes, it is a most startling display of hypocracy and venality by the BBKA.

Mmm, this is a very hot topic on the BBKA Boards at the mo - people have even been banned from the forum because of it!!

Banned for expressing opinions? My, that's democratic. If they were being abusive I'd understand. But then, I wasn't overly impressed by the head of the BBKA's limp performance on Farming Today... last month, was it? He waffled, he stumbled over his words, he went off the point, he didn't address the point... It was like listening to poor old Michael Foot in the 1980s when he led the Labour Party. As in, obviously intelligent but completely unsuited as a media spokesperson and advocate.

The guy in charge of a huge commercial beekeeping operation, who at the time was classing all non-commercial beekeepers as disease-spreaders, got away with the most outrageous rubbish simply because he was lucid, and entirely comprehensible.

Having now read that site you linked to, and thanks for that, I'd say a revolution is a-brewing and appears to have been so for some time...

The press release is pretty lame. "Recognise we live in a world where chemicals are used"... I think that was the phrase... Not sure what it's supposed to mean... Maybe, "We bow to our chemical overlords and take their money to keep our mouths shut and our campaigns on the drawing board"? Shameful, really. We're all whores in one way or another, so we've been told along the way, but it seems the BBKA 'leadership' is whoring full force and unrepentantly.

Not only is the BBKA saying nothing, but they actually receive payment from the pesticide companies for endorsing certain of their products which IMO is a clear conflict of interest

Thee guy from Biobees will be on BBC News24 talking about the BBKA/Bayer pesticides issue this weekend (June 7- at 3.30pm BST (GMT+1) on Saturday and Sunday + 10.30am Sunday. After that, it should be available on the BBC web site. Let's hope the BBKA are watching.
