My courgettes are starting to fruit now and most of the fruit is fine. However about a third starts to grow normally but then the top half stops growing and the bottom half swells to produce a spherical fruit. i.e. it ends up as a spherical fruit about 4 / 5 cm diameter with a 1 / 1.5 cm diameter tail. Most of these are hard and not particularly usable but the rest are perfectly acceptable.
Any ideas why this should be?

I get those sometimes too. My Gold Rush courgettes seem particularly prone - they are normally a darker yellow than the good ones. Could be a pollination thing, or not enough water perhaps?
Now I just chop them off when I spot them as they tend to be too bitter to be edible.
