Hello,

I'm fairly new to keeping chickens. I have four in total. Recently one of my dogs got hold of one of them. There are no puncture wounds, she did loose some feathers. But now will not stand. Is this just likely to be shock? Or perhaps is this the end? She does not seem to be in any pain. She will allow you to pick her up and does not object - no noise or flapping of wings. I would value any advice. I have brought her indoors for now.

Is her head moving and will she move her head? When my parents had hens one flew out and was rounded up by our dog. The hen lasted a few days but died as her nech was broken. (We ate her) However, one of our hens became very lame and could hardly walk a couple of years back. She made a full recovery and walks fine now. I would keep her inside, offer her water and some food and see how she goes.

sometimes chickens just go of their feet we had 2 do this for about 2 weeks we kept her in a small box and fed her by hand then 2 weeks later she got up with a bit of effort and made it back to the field with her freinds none the wiser

Ditto all the above advice. Just keep her quiet and wait and see for now. If she eats and drinks, then she will probably be OK. Try strawberries - I have never known a chicken to resist a strawberry!

We have had a couple that have taken to just "crouching" and not going anywhere. Very alarming at first but after a time they seemed to get themselves back to normal. We never did find out what the problem was (no dog attack) but maybe it was some kind of stress? Yours may be suffering the same. I think the above advice is good advice. Keep a close eye on her and she should be OK.

We had a young coq that was atacked by my mothers terrier the bird suffered a bad broken wing near the top and a puncture wound which sweeled up on his abdomen We taped his wing up with surgical tape (plaster on a roll) carefully and gave him a tiny bit of pheaumobiotique a antibiotic for all farm animals (french vet gave us it) and fed him porridge for two weeks he could not stand up and was a real mess I thought I might have to do the dirty deed but he slowly got better he was very young and now he has blossomed into a strong coq he gave his first crow last week and has also started to do what he is here for with the hens and we are very happy with him we call him Jok because he likes porridge now
