Prolly a daft question, but chicken bedding straw/poo etc, is it ok to compost?

It'll take a little while, though - the white bits are urea, which is high in ammonia. You might be better off using something like hemcore or fennington fibre rather than straw, as that is quicker to compost (Kirstyfern put me on to that!)

we use newspaper in the bottom of the hen house.. then roll that up poo and all and bung it on the compost. Composts really well.

If you have a shredder (or do it by hand), you can shred up household paper waste and use that, it will rot and compost with the chicken muck (plus its free)

This is slightly off topic but, we had a program over here on one of the cable networks recently about preppers. A family out west had a swiming pool that they converted to be sort of self sustaining.

They had chickens in their pens sort of suspended over the pool, and the droppings could fall through and feed fish. The fish water also contained edible duck weed.

I don't remember if they fed the duck weed back to the chickens, but that would complete the circle.

My mom would take old chicken manure and make a slurry to feed garden plants. Chicken poop soup we called it
