Bloody Hell!!! Another dog in with sheep. By the time Tim got there with his gun the dog and it's owners had buggered off. Brought a ewe home with her ears virtually ripped off.

This is the third time we in the last three years we have had dogs attack the sheep on this piece of ground. Pisses me off that people can't be more responsible - and to disappear without so much as a sorry, or can we pay the vet's bill. I have'nt got the symbols on the keyboard to tyoe the sound I want to make!!!!

Horrible thing to happen. Years ago a dog attacked one of my lambs (less than a week old) and bit one ear completely off. It healed over though, it was as if she'd only been born with one ear - the lamb recovered and spent many years with us.. she absolutely hated dogs though and was often a real nuisance when trying to round her up... cant blame her really!

The neighbours pug kept getting in with the goats - I knew when it happened as I would find one with it's head stuck in the electric netting - luckily it wasn't turned on! On one occassion the kid was nearly deas as the netting was so tight around his neck I had to cut him free Neighbours totally denied it was their dog but there is only 1 pug in the village, he frequently took himself out the gate for walks and I had 2 seperate people tell me it WAS the pug.

I am SO GLAD they have moved out now!

you can't shoot the owners unfortunatly but if you shoot enough dogs their irresponsible owners will maybe go bother sombody else.
Sorry to upset dog lovers but only a hard response is likely to stop it,word gets about.

As a dog lover, can I suggest that you get a dog from the RSPCA Out Tray and nail it to the gatepost as a warning to other dogs.

Not trying to be difficult here but, I thought it wasn't so easy for farmers to shoot dogs attacking livestock these days.
I understood that now you can't shoot it if the owner is present/you know who the owner is, and it can only be done as a last resort if there is no other way of halting the attack.
It's a shame the dog owners are so irresponsible, & I sympathise, our neighbours allow their dogs to run loose & I'm waiting to find feathers all over the place.

You are allowed to shoot any dog worrying stock on your land, they hav nt got to kill or maim before you can shoot them.

But you do have to prove there is nothing else you could reasonably do.

No you don't. I had this discussion with the dog warden when we had a spaniel that kept on coming onto our land and killing our chickens. She said that as we had sheep at the time - we could shoot the dog on sight.

AFAIK, as long as sheep are involved, the dog is legally considered to be 'worrying' if it is 'at large' where sheep are present - it doesn't have to be doing anything. This is not the case for other stock.

Not sure of the legal position re accompanied vs unaccompanied dogs though? If there is an owner present, do you have to give them the opportunity to retrieve their dog before you can shoot it (assuming they can't get the dog back)?
