I do tension swatches if it's something where fit matters, so for jumpers yes, always. It beats finding that you knit less tightly than whoever wrote the pattern and ending up with something too big! ...

I know the feeling, toggle - we have birds that do the same! I use the spare room bed and keep the door firmly shut while I have things blocking - it's the only thing I've come up with.
