From a chefs point of view I'm torn here. Game is so autumn and winter with roast roots and wild mushroooms, maybe some chokes.

On the other hand It would be great to have the option of fresh game meats on the menu all year round.

Is this a threat to the way these animals live though? Is there a danger of over shooting?

The seasons aren't changing, just the need to have a bit of paper to shoot & deal.

I wouldn't trust that BBC story, they class rabbit as game.

IIRC the deer seasons are changing, game seasons aren't.

Does it count as game from the point of view of dealing in it? The butcher in town who has a game license sells rabbit and the other one (who doesn't) doesn't.

Fresh game will still only be avaliable during the current season. BUT you will be allowed to sell game out of season (IE frozen). You still cant kill game out of season.

I see, although Rob's link defines game and then goes on to talk about the licences implying rabbit is covered by the "Licence to kill game Gamekeepers Licence", i.e. you need a game licence to kill rabbit. I didn't think that was the case? At least they are being scrapped so it'll not matter next month in England and Wales.

Rabbit are Game....but are exempted from the Game laws, because they have been classed public enemy No.1 by Defra!!! Under the Section One of the Pests Act 1954 by which England and Wales (except for the City of London, the Isles of Scilly and Skokholm Island) have been declared a Rabbit Clearance Area.

No idea about dealing in them though!
