What proportion white vinegar:water should be sprayed on weeds? We've just re-sanded brothers block paving after weeding and pressure washing. He could have got sand called No Weed..expensive,but it works by having a high Ph... Could he get the same result by watering with a vinegar/water solution?

Oh, interesting to see if vinegar will work. I'd prefer to use that than something like round-up.

Hmm, it must have to be extremely acid to stop germination. I'd imagine it leaches out too, have you checked for reviews of the product? If it needs to be that acid then you'd probably be dissolving your slabs when spraying anything of that pH

Vinegar is acid, will lower the pH. Kitchen vinegar is relatively mild, for weed killing there is some special, stronger vinegar available.

Since you mention "sanding" I'm not clear if you mean the blocks are wood and were sanded, or if they are stone and you were sanding the gaps between them.

If stone, then flame off the weeds. There's a garden flame weeder over here, made by Flame Engineering. The Red Dragon is like a Bernzomatic shop torch used for soldering. You are not incinerating the weeds, just slowly sweep back and forth until the weed leaves change from green to not so green. That indicates the leaf cells have ruptured. It is great for gravel areas, cracks in pavement, etc. There is even a field crop model used for row crops.

even paving has run off

mechanical( sharp hook, wire brush, stiff broom etc pressure washer )

flame thingys are ace for regular control

add a bit of dry lime to the dry sand you brush in, it helps solidity and reduces the number of things that can grow.
any white staining can be taken off the blocks with a hose if done after a couple of days or with a light acid wash later

try a discrete corner for the surface staining before you go for the whole thing

there is sand and sand, fine silver sand looks good in most BP but fine sharp is cheap and will fill gaps 5 mm or wider

avoid owt with grits in when sanding

That is alkaline. pH7 is neutral and anything lower than that acid.

Tried with white vinegar. Not particularly effective as it only burns the leaves. Maybe good for annuals, but not perennials

Try Acetic acid.

White vinegar is only 5% acetic acid
Horticultural vinegar is 20% acetic acid
Acetic acid can be up to +99%

Tried to find if vinegar etc etc is cleared for horticultural purposes, but I cannot see any clearance.

Tried gallons of undiluted white vinegar on Liverwort a few years back, but it had no effect.

Don't forget that an effective solution may kill plants for a long time and leach to affect surrounding areas. I'm far happier using a weed membrane under slabs. MM
