I'm always forgetting spring bulbs - every year I resolve to Plant More and every autumn I leave it too late...or I forget to prepare where I want them in time so am faced with an impenetrable mess of herbaceousness/bindweed/couch grass! Maybe this year..

Maybe tulips - they aren't supposed to go in until November so will be less late than other Spring bulbs!

I have a 'bargain' pack of alliums in the utility room still unplanted, I will put them somewhere but I really need to remember - BEFORE I buy such packs - that they cease to remain a bargain if half of them fail due to my procrastination...

Any bulbs you can find available for purchase now are likely not worth the money. Would you buy onions in September to cook with in January?

That said, this fall buy end-of-season "specials" and pot them up. Leave in a chilly place. They really need to make roots if they're to produce a nice display in April / May. Come Spring, you can shoehorn them in even amongst couch grass etc.

Another technique - decide where you want them to make an appearance. Flop a piece of sturdy corrugated cardboard over the area, then mulch on top. When it comes time to shoehorn in the potted, now-sprouting bulbs the cardboard will have performed its task of smothering weeds and begun rotting down to compost that can be dug in.

This Spring, take pictures of where you'd like to see new bulbs in your garden next year (2015 - my word that sounds so far in the future!) Print them out, and with indelible marker write what kinds of bulbs you'd like to have there. Then paperclip to the September 2014 calendar page as a memory aid.

I had a gift of a bowl of hyacinths for christmas and they have sprung up in a few days and all flowered the smell is wonderful and keeping the resident butterfly alive I think. Mo.XX
