Good morning,

I was fortunate enough for a youngish hare to come into my possession yesterday. (After sudden lead poisoning to the brain)
It is somewhat smaller than the last one I had (which was a beast!!)
What I wanted to do was to roast it, so I currently have it hanging in the garage, in a ventilated but protected hanging camping larder.

The question:
After one day should it be stinky

Every time I go into the garage my olifactory senses are assaulted by stinky hare smell

I am not naive enough to think you can hang up a dead animal and expect it to smell of roses (I would be worried if it did), but just how much should it smell....and at what point should I write it off as a disaster?

Hopefully this should provide a Sunday meal for the family, who will be returning from a weeks holiday in Spain on Sunday. (Otherwise it would not be allowed in the house!!!

Stinky after one day doesn't sound good A young one shouldn't need much hanging in any case, unless you like your game really high.

All hares smell stinky to me.
They are a naturally strong gamey smelling meat.
Don't be put off by it.

Give me a rabbit anyday

Even hares that have been snared and havent been bruised and abused by dogs or pellets give off a strong whiff when being gutted.
If your hare is small because of its young age it wont need much hanging.
I might be strange but I like my food to be fresh

All I can say is it sounds like you have much more fun while the missus is away than I do. All I got to do was dig and plant.

My 'fun' this week has been sorting out the garage.....
It is currently ALL over the loungr, dining room, kitcehn, utility room & hall!!!!
I'm not sure how I'm going to get it back in the garage!
But I HAVE to before they get back.

My reward.......

I will be allowed to use the night vision attachment for my air rifle!!!

Not for hares as that's 'illegal'....in fact the only thing that is lampable/nv'able AND edible is rabbits.....unless I'm mistaken.....unless you count a wood pigeon that is stupid enough to sit on a farm building during the hours of darkness (unlikely).

I would gut it now, skin it and roast it, I have never been comfortable with this hanging lark. and I hate nothing more than a dose of the green apple splats. So I would have eaten it straight away.

i hang pheasant and hare only a short while ,beef is best 5/6 weeks. maybe clean it now and marinade it in wine n herbs n spices until sunday . hares do pong a bit anyway should be ok if in dought cut into cubes and boil it for 30 mins ,dump water and stew (extra safe )but unless your garage is very hot all should be fine .

Thanks for all the replies. I shall get it in some marinade today. Unfortunately the ideal marinade bowl won't take a full bottle of wine Pete

For a young hare, I wouldn't use much wine at all - you will draw all the juices out. I would go for olive oil, seasonings and just a splash of wine for flavour. I'm sure you could find a good use for the rest of the bottle!
