Sounds like the Germans have got it right.
Two of the things that annoy me about uk refuse/recycling are;

1. Financial incentives to produce recyclables. I don't purchase bottles of 'pop' so therefore I don't have any to recycle - I should get a reward from council not the person filling a recycling box every week.

2 Household waste sites. As a commercial operator I pay over �120/ton to dispose of landfill waste. I appreciate councils probably have lower disposal charges but what with landfill tax I guess they (out of my/your taxes) still pay at least �80-�100 a ton. So when somebody does multiple trips to a household waste site with their old kitchen/bathroom/settee etc instead of paying for a skip its your tax that pays for somebody elses consumerism. If you can afford a new kitchen/bathroom/settee then you can afford a skip.

Not very popular but we need to adopt 'pay as you go' which essentially is what the Germans are doing.

What they don't tell us is how they combat fly-tippng, which is what we'd get here if we introduced pay per throw.

I haven't got an answer to fly-tipping except better education of the public about licensed waste carriers.
Anybody transporting or collecting waste should have a waste carriers licence and should issue a transfer note with the waste details on.
If you pay somebody without a licence to dispose of waste and they have no licence then they will not be allowed into a legitimate waste transfer facility therefore there is a high possibility they are fly tipping.

It's not so long ago, when we had a woolen industry, that lanolin was extracted from sewage and sold to the cosmetics industry.

I thought it was only when you feed vegetarian animals meat products.

I dont see an issue with using the animals as they are dead but are still a valued resource. Just like using the dead people's energy from cremation to heat the local buildings. We waste far to much. Either we stop wasting or we run out sooner.

There may be flytipping in Germany, but I doubt its much. All the Germans I know are proud of their country and would be horrified about littering and fly tipping. They suggest its because they all did National Service, driving ambulances, hospital portering, etc. They helped make Germany a good place to be and they want to keep it that way.

They can use them to heat swimming pools - No problem at all...I'd just rather not be rubbing them on my lips!

All that would be left for national service would be litter picking so it might work.

A bit of action and initiative from the Environment Agency would not go amiss.

They do not have to issue a transfer note for domestic waste. They should have to, but it seems we would need a change in the law to make that happen.

Of course if they do have a license, then that does not stop them fly tipping to avoid the fees at the waste facility.

Doesn't seem to be the case across Europe. I'm not sure there are front line soldiers doing National Service within the EU, but certainly support staff are there.

Would it work? I'm guessing what it does is give people a stake and pride in their country. Do many 17 year olds have that here, now? And by pride, I mean a love and feeling for the place and the other people in it, to look after it, and make it better, not just the ability to throw on a St George's flag T shirt and moan about Polish people.
