The impact of a failing economy and austerity cuts are beginning to take its toll on ordinary folk - disturbing images from our region this week miners versus police - grenade launchers and the rest.

I doubt you'll hear about it in the UK

Funny you should say that, page 8 of the metro today has the story although it only shows burning tyre barricades, nothing about grenade launchers.

Well, by definition, it cannot get further away; such is the nature of time.

What's the source, and can you provide a translation, please?

How does your average miner get his hands on a grenade launcher, exactly? Or did ETA flog 'em all off when they disbanded?

It looks home made judging by the way it's ignited with a cigarette lighter.

Asturian miners cut off several roads in a new day of protests over the announced withdrawal of government subsidies to coal mining, which in practice means the end of this sector.

Think 1984 - miners strike UK - throw in a failing economy, 24% unemployment (50% in under 26s)...

There was a bit on the BBC 22:00 news, they said it was just firework rockets being launched from a metal tube.

So "grenade launcher" is perhaps a little over-dramatic, then?

Perhaps not if you are a policeman facing them...

Think I'd probably be as worried by the catapulted stones. I thought the police were very restrained. The tear gas canisters didn't seem to do much, would have thought they'd go for it with rubber bullets or water cannon to be honest.

Restrained because it is likely you are facing your relatives or neighbours no matter which side you are on, it is such a small community.... desperate times for many

Trying to find a link for 3 groups of miners that are staging an underground sit in. They have been there for 21 days now. I think this will make 1984 in Britain look like a picnic
