We live in the woods where every one else as guns, what would you do? The 22 is for small game & slaughtering, the 12 gauge is at the side of my bed for protection & it will take down large animals if needed when used with buck shot & the 9mm is in a place thats handy in case i need it but I can also take it out with me when I go fishing, again for protection. This is America think on, not uk.
Woman out with a 13 month baby in a buggy, not far from here in Georgia was approached by a 14 year old & asked her for money & cos she didn't give em any they shot her baby in the face, this happened a few days back.Lots of crazy people over here!

I do hope then that one of those guns you own is a handgun so you can shoot the crazy fourteen year old. Only way to solve it really.

I did move lol, going back31 years I had my car stolen from outside my house, local guys had taken it, police found it & i got it back, next week 2am the wife you was due to have our first child woke me & said, they are trying to steal the car again. Threw some jeans on & ran outside bare foot, just as they were trying to start the car but couldn't. They started to free wheel in reverse as we lived on a hill, I ran down & pulled the door open, grabbed the driver out & the other guy ran off. The guy I had ended up unconscious & the police took him away. 2 years later he shot & killed a guy that came to his door threatening his sister but the guy he killed was a bad guy that had killed 2 people & even stole a body out of the hospital morgue & attempted to cut its head off to throw it thru some ones window! but he chickened out & dumped the body at the back of a working mens club, he was found out but the only thing they could charge him with was stealing a shroud. The point I am making is that there is bad people where ever you go, its just evened up over here cos not only does the bad people have guns but the good guys have em toooooooooooooooooo.

I gather there's something like 3 times more violent crime in the UK compared to the US though. Not something often highlighted by the press but it's not as straight forward as many believe.

It's more like there's violent crime where you get stabbed to death and violent crime where you're shot. I.e. not much difference. I agree though that the stats I've seen aren't that comparable but it's not really any safer in places in the UK compared to places in the US.

No. In the US violent crime is one of four specific offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

The British definition includes all crimes against the person, including simple assaults, all robberies, and all sexual offenses". The stats compare apples and oranges.

Massive difference.

This is an interesting article in that respect

https://blog.skepticallibertarian.com/2013/01/12/fact-checking-ben-swann-is-the-uk-really-5-times-more-violent-than-the-us/

and a set of stats comparisons which I suspect should be taken with a pinch of salt

I am inclined to agree, I don't hear of many fist fights over here but only last week a friends grandson got hit in the face over a taxi outside a pub, which smashed his eye socket, came close to losing his sight. Another one I remember hearing about a female friend in a taxi line & got called a slag & when she answered back she ended up with a broken shoulder! Lots of pubs in Britain & drinking is a part of life which in turn leads to fights ect, just imagine if guns were allowed, yikes!!

if guns took a larger part in social interactions in the UK say on a friday-saturday night. I would view it more as a post birth form of contraception.

which might not be a bad thing having just watched Skint on channel 4
