There's good news, and there's bad news.
The bad news is that we're entering the worst part of the year for mushrooms. There may be the odd blewit to come, but to be honest you're almost restricted to those mushrooms that can be found all year. Oyster mushrooms are still common, as are some of the other lignin degraders, but I personally don't hold out much hope for mushrooms right now.
The good news, and it's really, really good news, is that if you're really observant you'll already see the fist signs that Spring is around the corner. Chives are starting to sprout, and if you're lucky you'll find some by sheltered spots in hedgerows. Cow parsley is young, sweet and tender, as are nettles. Sorrel can usually be found all year, and the wild sorrel plant in the corner of my garden has just started throwing up new leaves. Wild fennel is starting to sprout green shoots too, and new rocket seedlings can be seen. Jack by the hedge (garlic mustard) often sprouts in Autumn, ready to race away in Spring. Keep your eyes open for it; mixed with some sorrel, dandelion and any winter salad vegetables you have (lambs lettuce, winter lettuce, etc) it adds a lot of interest to a wild salad.
The bad news (I lied, there are two bits of bad news) is that this is all happening far too early in the season... Welcome to a warmer world. |
