Just in the throes of sorting this out. You can change the recipient quite easily, which means that the non-working (in the paid sense) partner gets their NI contributions protected.

I didn't realise if effected the NI contributions anyway. How does that work.

If you're in receipt of child benefit then even if you don't pay NI your pension entitlement etc. will be treated as if you did. I don't think it entitles you to sick pay or other benefits, and if you are earning you still have to pay, so it's not an opt out.

some sort of pension protection thingy I think. The other thing to think about if one of you isn't earning is that that person doesn't pay tax on savings. There's a form your savings account provider can give you, which explains.

Yes Sean it is very simple to change. Either get a form from the Post Office or write to the address on the book. It takes a few weeks.
The way it works, as you say, is that the recipent is classed as having paid N.I> while receiving the benefit. This goes towards your basic pension entitlement calculations.
It was designed to ensure that women still got a pension (even if it is a pittance) if they give up work for a few years.

Ours is paid by direct transfer, so I rang the IR, they've sent me a form by return of post. The original recipient has to include a letter saying that they're happy with this for HRP purposes.
