Since landowners have an obligation to destroy rabbits on their land and prevent them causing damage to neighbouring property, I think you would be on a very sticky wicket encouraging them.

See https://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-countryside/vertebrates/rabbit.htm

Interesting, I bet there are large swathes of Government properties where rabbits are not controlled. Do many people actually take these obligations seriously? If so it would be easier to find shooting.

So, basically, if you buy some land that has rabbits on it and you don't take steps to wipe them out you are braking the law. Well, there are several places advertising rabbit shooting for hire where they sat they don't over hunt so it also looks like these people are braking the law.

I agree you should take steps to stop them being a pest to neighbours, but what's wrong with keeping them on your land and 'harvesting' for the pot?

firstly it is illegal to move wild animals with the intention of introducing them to areas without permission, and if rabbits from yr land cause damage to neighbours you are liable

That's does seem everyones opinion. I had only considered it if I owned the land and there was little risk to other land owners.

However, I'm more concerned with the fact that in theory you are obliged to wipe out rabbits from your land. This would seem to prevent one of the best ideas from living from the land.

From the Defra link:

'An Order has been made under Section One of the Pests Act 1954 by which England and Wales (except for the City of London, the Isles of Scilly and Skokholm Island) have been declared a Rabbit Clearance Area. In this area, every occupier of land is responsible for destroying wild rabbits on his/her land or for taking steps to prevent them causing damage. This is a continuing obligation.'

But I would hope if you do catch rabbits on your land it's more than many people do so you wouldn't fall foul of Defra.

Landowners do know, so does DEFRA. I have been called in 13 times this year!

One landowner ended up in court for firing at me!
