Hey Im new to shooting quarry and this forum.

Just after some advice really!

Just aquired a small bit of land to shoot on with my mate. The land owner has given us permission to use air rifles/shotguns as we both are fully insured with the good old BASC.
Tried our hands at hide building last sunday with a bag of 4 woodies which were put to good use (are bellys) though we believe we could of done alto better.

Is it true that if you put out a crow decoy the woodies seem more relaxed should I say and are more willing to land into the flight path?

Also what is the most effective set out for the decoys, the 'V' formation or the 'U'?

Its mainly an opened field we have to shoot though we have alot of cover from where we built our hide. If any one has any tips for decoy/hide shooting we would appreicate it.
We just want to show the farmer we are worthy of him given us persmission and would like to thank him by thinning out the numbers munching on his land!

a daft question but what does 'paunch' mean with regards to a rabbit?

also hoping to gain some more shooting rights soon so I can take my air rifle out hunting.

I don't know anything about decoys and such like I'm afraid, but I do know how to paunch a rabbit Basically means to get rid of the innards - I do it about 20 mins after it's killed - slit from bottom to breast on the tummy, then with a deft flick, out come the wriggly bits. It's best if you're shown really I was by people on here Oh, and welcome to the site by the way

Yep, shown by Pricey, Bunnykiller and Sparky but I didn't quite manage the 'gut flick'. A small, very sharp knife certainly helps with the initial cutting.

There will be other shooters on here to offer advice. I don't use hide or decoys. And I see TD and Penny have sorted out paunching.

Amazing how many rabbiters come out of the woodwork!

A rabbit paunch is when the guy with a shotgun has got a belly hanging over his belt

Honestly though it's all in the flick! Get it wrong and it swings up into you face

After that you have to become Quincy and get you hands right in there to undress Mr Rabbit. It's all a bit intimate, but the rabbit is past caring!

Finally you get to smell wet rabbit for a couple of days.....the smell kinda lingers!

I have heard that one or two confidence crows can help with the woodies.....b'cos the crows are much much more intelligent...in they have landed then it must be safe! How very very wrong.

Try filling in your location, then you can get anyone in the area asking to help out!!!

Still looking for some willing rabbits in the Essex area....

So what is the main reason for 'Paunching' rabbits out in the field then? Only reason I can see is to reduce the weight.

If the guts have been punctured at all then the contents will taint the meat very rapidly.
