We get dog fur from a friend who grooms cairns, the birds take a carrier bag full each year, it's really funny to see chaffinches with a moustache, and bluetits trying to carry off a chunk he same size as they are. I was always told that boxes should be up by Valentines day, so this weekend is ideal.

As an aside, does everybody here mistype nestbox? Treacodactyl did it a couple of times in his original post and I told him off for being careless...now I've noticed I do it and so do others.

How do you dispense it? I put it in an onion net, and hung it in a tree, but I'm not sure that anyone except the bluetits will be able to get at it (nothing to perch on) I might just buy another feeder for it. You can buy special dispenses, but they were a wire spiral for about �20

When we dag the sheep we just leave it on the floor. The birds soon collect it up over a couple of weeks.

Went to the local harware shop yesterday, fully motivated after this thread. No nestboxes....oh we'll be getting stuff like that in the summer! Replied the new owner!!!!!

well its 'garden' stuff, and therefore people want it in the summer! Like you can't get skewers in the winter, as no-one barbeques (I bought metal ones in the end!)

I'm glad they came through. The words will look blured unless viewed at 100% or printed. They should then be readable. PM either Bugs or myself, here or on the RC if you need any other details or want them posted. Owls are well worth the time. Has anyone else thought about making nest boxes for owls? If so have they even been used?

ah you realised it was me, il also be putting some wood pecker type boxes,and some robin and tit boxs,iv been colecting driftwood from thr fjord,so its well weatherd and look quite natural,iv got a lot of tree in the back garden,and behind the garden there is a wood,i know the guy who owns the land and im going to ask him if i can put some up in his tree�s

Have you looked on the RSPB site for bird boxes? I've actually got a few books with various designs in, well worth it if you plan to make a wide variety. If you just need general details let us know as I can post up things like box size and entrance hole size. Mind you, you'll probably place several boxes about, come home one day and find a nest in your watering can.

just thought i would tell you my unusual nest tale.my first job was a rope lad on the cross tyne ferry from hebburn to wallsend, we had a black bird make a nest behind the wheelhouse and she used to go back and forth on the boat,if the boat left while she was off the nest many of time she has turned up on the boat mid river, she had about four clutchs

I think birds can get to know when they are safe. We've had nests in normal places (in trees, hedges etc) but with cats, foxes, grey squirrels, magpies, rats etc not many survive. It's also a little hard to control these in a town garden. Still I've planted plenty of thorny shrubs and put up bird boxes so there's hope.

last year on the plot our incinerator (one of those dustbins with a lid and chimney sort of thingy) was viewed by a pair of jackdaws as a likely des res and the female was seen on many occasion popping down the chimney with twigs etc. We'd spotted her early on so stopped using it. Unfortunately the local's round here regard them as pests and I think some fellow plot holders disturbed her too much and she abandoned the nest before she'd laid anything.
