My mate from NYS would kill for a moderator to go onto his rifle. He's amazed that we can get them quite easily here in the UK, its a big deal over there and it would would mean a long stretch for him if he was caught with one hunting over there.

Isn't it strange. The US is famous for its gun culture, drop by any Walmart and pick up an arsenal, and yet moderators are the devils own tin can.

I'm not sure. I believe they're banned in Australia as well. Too much Hollywood? I'm not aware of many killers having used them.

They're pretty easy to get here. If you have an air rifle you can just buy one and if your're a rifle owner all you need to do is apply for a variation. Acceptable reasons for indoor or range shooting is health and safety and if you have permission to shoot on land then you don't need any further justifcation. A lot of stalker don't use them but vermin controllers may well do.

The police don't have an issue with them.

IIRC they don't like people using them in France, anyone know for sure and what other European countries think about them?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but just as an aside, and out of curiosity, I'm living in Canada at the moment, but have a UK 22 air rifle with moderator/silencer. I also now have a .22 rimfire rifle. Would the moderator for the air rifle work on the .22 as they seem to be the same calibre. Jerry

As the .22 rimfire is over 50 times more powerfull unless the moderator is "proofed" I would not risk it. Richard

what does it take to get a rifle into the UK? i've got a very nice german .22 which is sitting in Canada gathering dust...

You need to have good reason to posses one. This can either take the form of land over which you have permission to shoot the calibre and a reason to shoot, e.g. vermin control. The land does not need to belong to you. Or, you need to be a member of a gun club which is authorised to allow you to shoot that calibre. With a .22 you shouldn't have a problem with either.

You need to apply using a firearms certificate application form and you'll also need to get secure storage for the gun. Once applied for you will receive a visit from your local firearms officer who will interview and may well check your storage at the same time or at a subsequent visit.

i live in london. there is lots of vermin walking the streets here. is that a good enough reason to own one???? but seriously - is there a website or something where i can look to see what they define as secure storage etc. i've tried contacting a few london clubs in the past to see if i can join but snobbery prevented them from returning calls/emails....

Thanks - would love to pick it up again as I haven't been able to bare parting with my rifle and hate to see it lying unused.

Now can anyone recommend any "friendly" clubs in London area?

Most gun dealers and online stores will provide a suitable approved cabinet. You'll need to fix it to a solid wall preferably with concrete block or brick using anchor bolts (often provided with the cabinet). It's good to have the cabinet out of sight e.g. under the stairs or in a back room so its not visible from outside. It's quite a good idea to fit it into a corner such that it would be difficult to lever the door open with a pry bar. You must never tell anyone where the keys are kept, sometimes FAOs will ask a trick question to see if you have - instant refusal of certificate.
