Glad to hear that some poor hens will be saved and given some quality of life. A friend of mine has some and after a while it's great to see the change in them. I had a saturday job when I was a kid collecting the eggs on a battery farm, it was horrible to see them stuffed in their cages.

They are coming from the Battery Hen Welfare trust in North Devon. Apparently at the end of June they are rescuing over 2000! They have already found homes for them so keeping hens must be a popular past time at the mo.

Sorry Gertie, after responding to your mail I just noticed you are in fact nowhere near me! The welfare trust obviously covers a large area.

My ladies will reside in a house made by Mr Kinky, which looks great I must say. I got the plan from a book I think Tahir recommended - Poultry House Construction by Michael Roberts. We thought the ladies might like to have their home in part of the orchard so they can get in touch with their chickeny roots (although I don't suppose jungles had cider apple trees) .

That's a good book, I've build a hen house from it.

If you give the hens free run of the orchard take care with foxes as they will be about during the day.

Am thinking about netting part of the orchard. I read somewhere that I can get netting specifically for chickens. I also think I read about electric netting to deter foxes, my concern is that it might harm the ladies.

Sort of. I have had a few batches of hens from Jane, and Have helped find homes for some. I will soon be able to do home visits for them for prospective homes.
