He came along to the little pheasant shoot I belong to to be a beater for the day, but as there were for some reason more beaters than Guns that day, the shoot captain invited him to shoot in the afternoon.

He bagged a lovely yearling cock bird in a textbook shot, it tumbled once and landed at the feet of Gervase (who was shooting that day as a guest). It was a cracking shot and a nice bird, and we will be eating it tomorrow or Wednesday.

Aye, the guy's a natural shot (goddamit!), and bagged his first bird in textbook fashion. He's also great company and potentially an excellent ambassador for the sport. Well done Jack! PS: He's got a fairly important birthday on Friday, but probably wouldn't want too many people to know about it!

Unless they're for roasting it's quicker and simpler to skin pheasants than faff about plucking them IMHO.
