For those who have ran out of stored spuds, if you are buying them, they're around now.

Desperately expensive though.

When I was a kid there were two sorts available for sale on the markets; Jersey Royals and Jersey Flukes. The latter were always available in smaller numbers, pennies cheaper, but my parents always insisted that they had a better flavour. I can't find any information on what these spuds were.

Anyone know?

I don't remember Jersey Flukes, but I do remember Jersey Royals when they were worth buying. Nowadays they seem, like most commercial spuds, to be watered too much so you get more weight and less flavour. Some are probably grown under cover too. I haven't bought any for years as they became disappointing and, IMO, not worth the premium price. Still, maybe I should try some again to confirm or refute my prejudice...

Bizarre, because you could definitely buy spuds labelled as either when I was a kid. I wonder if some market traders simply maintained the old name?

Or the growers retaining the heritage and better marketing - may have been different sides of the island!
