Where should I start looking for houses then? Amazingly, himself has not laughed the idea out of the water immediately! I'd need to be within half an hour of the hospital, and not near too many people. Not bothered about a see view. Ironically, my meat already comes from devon!

The hospital is on the outskirts of town, on the road that splits to Ilfracombe and Combe Martin, IIRC. Have a look at the map, bearing in mind that Barnstaple traffic can be awful if you have to drive through the middle of town, especially from the South Molton-end.

The bopproperty site covers the area reasonably well. I'll get a North Devon Journal at the weekend and stick up some of the other agent's websites. Being a bit further away from the sea gets you a lot more house for your money.
I like Torrington, but I would say that, and it's probably on the outer limits of what you would want to commute.

Thanks guys - that's exactly the sort of thing thats useful to know! I have to be within half an hour for on-call duty, and I really don't fancy a much longer commute than that anyway, so I'll have a look over towards somerset way. I haven't applied for the job yet - do you think I'm getting carried away!?!

Nah, not for me. Lacks character and a soul. Give me my 15thC farmhouse with its knackered barn any time. It will take some house to beat how I feel about mine.

It seems awfully expensive for what/where it is? I was sent a house in rural(as it gets) Sussex but within driving distance of T Wells the other day...11+ acres...jolly pretty house...paddocks (wot is expensive round here) room for an au pair...bit of woodland...comparative bargain at a piffling 650k.

Apparently, that "matched my criteria"...maybe they know something I don't

i sometimes can't understand how things are valued as there seem to be huge variations within the same area

why can you buy a house and one acre for the same price as a house and 4 or 5 in the same general area?

dont' understand any of it

anyway it would appear that the lottery numbers didn't come up again so you will all have to find your own holiday accomodation as my current home isn't big enough for him, me, 2 greyhounds and 7 cats as it is............

but there's always tomorrow night.................and you never know...

but before you get excited - there is a teensy problem. In that end of the village, a farmer has recently sold a plot of land to a sand extraction company that are now seeking permission to get at it. ( although there is a local campaign to stop them if possible) So unfortunately you might not feel like hanging out your washing for the next 10 years and the double glazing had better be good! It does have a swimming pool though - disused!

Village lovely though, pub excellent!

We'd be 'neighbours'!

Long list Twoscoops - noise, too close to existing houses, big lorries through tiny country lanes, road junction on to dual carriage way not designed for this sort of traffic, pollution and general loss of peaceful rural area. For 10 years apparently.

Blimey. We have quarries in a similar area, 4 of them. Noise is rare and there is little visibility. We do get lorries but they aren't a problem, and due to the public not being allowed near them they are havens for wildlife. In fact, one quarry has closed and the owners have donated the site to the RSPB. I just accept that if I want to live in a brick house and drive on metalled roads then we have to have these types of works.

the problem application is this area is a wind farm

there is an old air field about 6 miles from where i live and someone has applied to have a wind farm on the site

usually there is an option for them to be put out to sea but for some reason not in this case

i have looked at the plans etc and frankly they won't affect my view of the countryside so i have no problems but a lot of closer residents are squite up in arms about it

there ae some cheaper houses in that area now

there was the same kerfuffle about sizewell power station and no one notices it now so i woudl imagine the wind farm would be the same..............
