Advice advice....
Good idea to have a look / try at a gunshop...
If you say where you're from then someone may be able to point you to a good one / steer you away from a bad one.
The mags......they tend to write everything up as good...I guess they don't test the really rubbich one's, but they do test some that are not good enough for hunting and give them a good write up....they don't want to upset the manufacturers!!
There are some BIG choices to be made, and everyone has differing views...
FAC or sub 12 ft/lbs(no licence) if you have an FAC and where you shoot is cleared for FAC air rifles then they definately give the cleanest kill....however this is probably NOT a good idea for a first rifle.....don't let anyone tell you that you can get away with your rifle running above 12 ftlbs....they won't be there to comfort you when the police destroy your rifle or you end up inside.
.22 or .177 (I'll leave out .20 & .25 as they are perhaps a bit specialized for a first gun. Traditionally .22 was the hunting calibre and .177 for target. The views are slowly changing. In the right rifle .177 is a much more forgiving calibre as it flies flatter, so you have less adjustment to make for range. However .22 is still considered to be harder hitting, so if you can hit the target in the right place then .22 is possibly better....if you are thinking of ratting then .22 (or this is where .25 comes in!)
PCP or spring (gas ram) PCP needs to be refilled from a bottle or pump and tend to be more expensive. HOWEVER it also is vitually recoilles so is easier to be more accurate. So you could do the sorrt of shots a springer shooter would be proud of earlier than him! However if you then shoot a spring gun, you will probably find it difficult.
Shot count on the PCP's varied from about 40 to 500 depending on regulated or un-regulated and how big the air resevoir is. If the sort of scenario you are likely to encounter would require alot of shots (rats) then go for a larger count. If you are likely to have your own air bottle then you may get away with a smaller count and thus a lighter rifle.
Single shot vs multi shot....multishot springers are both rare and tend to be expensive for good ones (Im leaving out the Jackal's Steve!) Single shot OK, but can be a pain in a fast situation or i the dark!
Possibly try going along to a club....you will probably find that the members there are only too eager to show you their pride and joys, and to let you try.....it needs to suit you. Don't let anyone tell you that what suits them is the best thing for you.
For a first gun, then second hand is a good route. When you know what you want, don't go and buy the first one you find, unless it really is a bargain... people are ALWAYS upgrading or selling up...and some people have got a lot of rifles.

Be careful, airgunners are sensitive types, and don't like people taking the p! They don't suffer fools on that website, but if you are genuine then you will get some good advice, and probably offers of help.
