apparently these are also still on the statute:

It is legal for a male to urinate in public, as long it is on the rear wheel of his motor vehicle and his right hand is on the vehicle.

I thought you also had to cry out 'In pain' - or something like it, 3 times...

Defo - straight in the boot as we have done on a number of occasions before!

I'd have picked it up without hesitation. We eat vast amounts of roadkilled pheasant every year but only rarely get a bumped deer. Just remember to go for the 'peel and select' approach rather than the 'gut and butcher' as mushy entrails can put you off that nights treat of panfried venison fillet slightly

I`ve done a few deer I`ve found at the road side,I always go on heat and smell. If it`s warm good!If there is no smell of poop even better.
If not skin and see where the bruises are and trim the meat, saving the bloody and bruised for the dogs/ferrets.
Get the meat chilled asap.

Don't you have to take the hoofs/feet (what do deer have?) off in 2 hours of the kill because it can taint the meat?
I found a road kill recently & was told not to bother because of this - obviously not knowing how long it had been there.

Just a few words of warning. I think it is illegal to pick up road kill deer without the owners permission and I read in a shooting magazine that it's even illegal to pick up pheasants etc. With deer be very careful it's not still alive otherwise you make be hurt by it.

For me though, the main thing to worry about would be if the animal had been poisoned and that caused it to be hit by a car or the carcass had been poisoned. Not sure how likely it is to happen but I've heard a few people say it has.

If you do notice a wounded deer then please phone the local police ASAP so someone comes to dispatch the poor animal ASAP.

I think that for some reason the law makes a distinction between you picking something up that you've knocked over and something that someone else has knocked over.
In other words it doesn't encourage you to use your vehicle as you would a shotgun but that you're alright picking somebody elses accident.

You're right Bodger. Round these parts country lore means thats its accepted if you run something over and kill it, you wait for the next car along, he/she loads it and you share the meat.
We country folk never leave a good meal by the roadside!

Yes - but someone I knew years and years ago had a deer literally jump out of a hedge on to his bonnet, to the total detriment of the deer and a relatively mild detriment of his car. Sometimes you just can't stop, however carefully you're driving :/.

interesting, I wouldn't have the know-how to do the whole 'bleed out' thing, but I reckon I could manage hacking off a leg.

Actually on second thoughts

What are your chances of getting sick, through say the animal having been sick itself, or poisoned or summat?

thanks
Gav
